Snowdrops

Welcome to Snowdrops!

Our class is named after the bravest flowers of them all and the first to emerge each spring, the snowdrops.

In our class we celebrate when our friends have achieved their goals and encourage each other to be the best that we can be. We use beautiful manners and are kind to one another. Our teacher is Miss Corbett and Mrs Maiker is our teaching assistant.

In Reception, we love to learn through play both indoors and outdoors. You will find us outside whatever the weather! We love to explore and investigate and try to persevere when things are tricky. During the year we learn through different learning enquiries. These are based on the children's ideas as well as current themes and interests. We strive to ignite children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, building their capacity to learn, form relationships and achieve.

Stories, books and reading are at the heart of what we do every day and children are supported to grow a love of reading, becoming confident and independent early readers by the end of Reception. Through daily Read, Write, Inc phonics sessions, the children learn to read through a structured, systematic approach to phonics, where they learn to sound out letters and blend them into words. The children are encouraged to develop their writing skills through imaginative play and exploration of their environment. We provide many real-life experiences for the children in their first year of school which will include cooking, gardening and walking around our local area to experience the changing seasons. We also go on school trips.

Each child has a Reading Log which should be in school every day.  The Reading Log is for parents to record the reading that takes place at home and for school staff to record information about the progress children are making in their reading.  Reading books are changed on a Monday. Children should read their school reading book as many times as possible during the week to consolidate their learning.

All children are part of 'Drawing Club', which they are always so excited about! Each week is based on a different story, traditional tale or animation and the children draw either a character, setting or answer a question based on the story. We make the drawings come to life through magical codes linked to our current literacy and maths. The children always amaze us with the fantastic imaginations. Through Drawing club, we are able to open different worlds to the children whilst at the same time enriching their language skills, developing their fine motor and share the magic with them. Drawing Club is a fantastic place to start a child's experience of school 'Literacy'. In Reception, we use both the White Rose Maths and NCETM Mastering Number schemes to support our teaching towards the Early Learning Goals. Mastering Number is taught four times a week in 10-15 minute sessions. It is number focussed and moves slowly so that children develop a sound understanding of each step before moving on.

PE is on a Monday morning. The children will be changing for PE in school. PE kits should be kept in school on your child’s peg. They will be sent home each half term holiday.
