Welcome to Primrose Class
In Year 1 Mrs Hope teaches Monday to Wednesday, supported by Miss Norton on Monday and Tuesday mornings. On Thursday and Friday the class is taught by Miss Old, with support from Miss Mellor on Thursday and Friday morning.
Phonics is taught daily through the Read Write Inc. programme.
Reading books are changed every Monday if diaries are signed, and children can also choose an extra “share with me” book from our class library. Our longer class stories this year include The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark, The Enormous Crocodile and The Penguin Who Wanted to Know.
In maths we follow the White Rose scheme, supported by four weekly Mastering Number sessions to develop fluency and confidence. At home, children can also use Numbots to consolidate their skills.
In history we explore the life of Elizabeth II, photographs from the past, toys and games from the 1960s compared with today, life in Halton Castle, and the work of local author Lewis Carroll. Highlights include a trip to Halton Castle and Norton Priory and a special medieval day in school.
In geography we study our local area, learn about the UK and its capital city, practise map skills, and explore why Beechwood is so special.
In science we investigate body parts and senses, seasonal changes, animals and humans, everyday materials, and plants.
We love being creative, producing wonderful art in our evidence books through mark-making, colour mixing, real-life drawings of fruit and vegetables, and sculpture — including a giant collaborative newspaper spider! The children also enjoy design technology, music, RE, PSHE and computing.
Our classroom has purposeful continuous and enhanced provision to support a smooth transition from the Early Years into Year 1. PE lessons take place every Monday and Friday, so children will need their kit in school on those days.
Homework is sent home in red books every Wednesday and should be returned the following Monday. This may include spellings taken from the 45 Year 1 common exception words, handwriting, phonics or maths activities.
We are really excited about the year ahead and can’t wait to share our learning journey with you!
